In recent years, thanks to fully tapping its sea potential, the island district of Van Don is seeing strong socio-economic development. From a poor island district contributing just 5 billion VND to the state budget in 2005, Van Don has become a large centre of economic development, channeling 45 billion VND in 2011 and 21 billion VND in the first four months of this year.

The fisheries trade union in Tam Quang commune, Nui Thanh district in the central province of Quang Nam was officially established on June 7. The union works to support workers in the industry to make the most of the country’s seafood resources while protecting the sovereignty over sea and islands.

With a 65km coastline and the three large estuaries of Cua Dai, Ham Luong and Co Chien, Ben Tre province holds huge potential to develop its maritime economy, especially aquaculture. Thousands of hectares of coastal marshland are ideal breeding grounds for oysters.

Since 2011, 32 coastal communes and wards in Tuy Phuoc, Phu Cat, Phu My and Hoai Nhon districts and Quy Nhon city in Binh Dinh province have joined the movement, “All people participate in aquatic resource protection,” gaining positive achievements, Head of the Binh Dinh provincial Bureau of Aquatic Resources Exploitation and Protection, Mai Kim Thi said.
